The Write Stuff

I love books and their characters and their writing. And I love to read about books and their characters and their writing.

So I adored this piece by Andrew Solomon in the New Yorker about advice to young writers.

writing It’s a short read and worth the click.

The part that resonated with me was this:

Remember that writing things down makes them real; that it is nearly impossible to hate anyone whose story you know; and, most of all, that even in our post-postmodern era, writing has a moral purpose.

The Holidays in Washington

The holidays are a great time in live in Washington D.C. as the city gets all decked out for the occasion.

The Christmas Tree in front of the U.S. Capitol building is a must-see sight. It’s a great place to take pictures. With one angle you can get the Capitol in the background and, by turning around, you can get the Washington Monument.

Women in 2014 election

The 2014 midterm election saw some historic gains by women. Here’s a few of them:

Election

  • Alma Adams (D-N.C.) makes it 100 women serving in Congress. Because she won a special election to replace former Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.), she won’t have to wait for January to be sworn in. When the new Congress arrives on Jan. 3, there are likely to be more than 100 women serving concurrently for the first time in congressional history.
  • Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) became the first women senators from their state.
  • Mia Love (R-Utah) became the first Republican black woman elected to the House.
  • Elise Stefanik (D-N.Y.), who is 30 years old, has become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
  • With Republicans controlling the Senate next year, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is poised to become chairwoman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
  • In the 2014 election, 51 percent of the people who voted were women, 49 percent were men, according to CNN.

Brad Pitt brought his World War II drama “Fury” to Washington D.C. on Wednesday for its world premiere.

Wearing a gray suit and blue tie, Pitt walked the red carpet alone, stopping along the way to chat with several World War II veterans in attendance.

Vice President Joe Biden made a surprise appearance. He didn’t walk the red carpet with Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Bernthal, Loran Lerman, and Jason Isaacs but he was spotted chatting with several of the actors at a private reception before the film began.Continue reading “Brad Pitt brings “Fury” to Washington”

Michelle Obama’s fashion worries

Michelle Obama demonstrated she has the same concerns as modern women when it comes to fashion.

The first lady admitted to wearing Spanx and worrying what she wears during a Fashion Education Workshop at the White House on Wednesday.

“My ability to do my job is really linked to what I’m wearing,” she told fashion students from around the country, who had come to the White House to learn tips and tricks from the who’s who of A-list designers.

White House Correspondents’ Association dinner (#nerdprom)

Lupita Nyong’o, Jessica Simpson, Julianna Margulies, Kristen Bell, Robin Wright, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Goldwyn, casts of “Veep,” “Scandal,” and “House Cards” — the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner celebrated its 100th anniversary this weekend.

I was lucky enough to do some freelance work for US Weekly during the festivities (because when there’s 15 parties over three days it takes a village of reporters to cover).

Some fun tidbits I picked up in my adventures:

Welcome

I’ve always loved a good story.

My favorite books growing up included The Chronicles of Narnia (Peter was my first crush), Little Women (Jo totally should have ended up with Laurie!), and The Little House on the Prairie series (I grew up in rural Missouri so I can relate).

Growing up, I discovered the writings of Ernest Hemingway and Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Historical fiction (like Herman Wouk’s The Winds of War and War and Remembrance) is my favorite genre but I will pretty much read anything that is well written and plotted.

I became a story teller (i.e. journalist) when I grew up. But I recently switched to the communications side of the profession. However, I still love to read, write, and tell stories so that’s what I’ll be doing here. You’ll find some pop culture posts and maybe a few health and fashion tidbits. This is just my personal space on the internet to write what interests me. All opinions/content are my own.

Thanks for stopping by!
